Baby Steps

Few things have happened since my last entry. I now have my first client since starting Juggernaut Fitness. Her name is Erin and I am very excited about this particular case.

Erin has a rare disability called Arthrogryposis. A congenital condition that affects the joints and connective tissues. Thus limiting one's use of their joints and muscles. This is a very brief description for a more in depth explanation just click on the link.

Nutrition will be a fairly simple task because we just reviewed her normal diet and began to "tweak" some things and clean some thing up. Exercise however will be a very different story. You see she has very limited use of her extremities so a normal exercise program is just not an option. She can do some walking but she has no synovial fluid in her joints so too much load baring movement can get very painful. However, I firmly believe that all strength must first emanate from the core. Erin has full use of her core muscles, so, we will start with the middle and work out way out. I admit that I am not yet completely sure what we are going to do for exercise but I am looking forward to challenging myself creatively and I know she will be a joy to work with.

On another note I have found out that the good folks at Google have now made it easy to build your own free website with no prior programming knowledge. it is actually very similar to constructing this blog so look for Juggernaut Fitness to have it's own website in the near future.

That's all for today folks. Check in regularly and tell all your friends about me. Every five hours of training I sell from your referrals will get you a free hour training and/or nutrition seminar.

What are you staring at kitty?

I've been trying to find a way to get my printer to actually make business cards. I went out and bought some paper that comes with those fun little perforations so all you have to do is punch out the cards, but no matter what I do it won't line up properly.
After a few hours of banging my head against the wall I did manage to get about 80 cards. I tried to print off 100 but the first page and the last page were off. A few of my cards turned out with the logo at the bottom of the card as opposed to the top and it actually looks pretty darned good.

Now on to the really important matters. Over the past week or so my cat has taken to staring at me in the most uncomfortable fashion imaginable. Ordinarily this would not bother me but sometimes she'll just sit there for hours at a time and just stare. Sometimes when I am going about my business I'll look over and there she is just staring away, not even blinking. I don't know if she's sick of me and planning my eventual demise or if she thinks I'm going to make a tasty dinner.
I figured maybe she wants some attention so I picked her up and set her in my lap but she jumped right back off and resumed staring at me from by my feet......... She's doing it right now.......Maybe you should send somebody over in a few minutes just to check if I am still here.

That's all for now, technology makes my nauseated.

Walking!!!

So I've just returned from handing out fliers door to door and I can't feel my hands or toes. Talk about paying your dues. I don't know how I'm even managing to type right now.

I just got home, flipped on Crossfit radio (I am that hooked yes I am) and I hear something that I already knew but I'm going to address right now anyway.
According to the American heart association, 6o% of North Americans are overweight. Funny thing is that when the Low Fat high carb diet became the norm the obesity rate was 30% hmmm. Maybe a calorie just isn't a calorie after all. But more on that some other time.
In order to combat this epidemic of obesity our friends at the American Heart Association have made some recommendations.
30 minutes of moderate exercise up to 5 days a week, such as brisk walking hmmm....
Or they recommend maybe doing something intense such as jogging. I'm sorry I wouldn't consider jogging to be intense exercise. Jogging is considered "LISS" or "low intensity steady state" exercise.
Also known as "LSD" or "long slow distance" nowhere is "intense" listed anywhere in those definitions. If you want to do something intense get your ass outside and run! A jog is just a bouncy walk.

Finally they have presented us with 8 - 12 repetitions of 8 - 12 resistance exercises. Not listed are exercises to do, weight to use, frequency of these exercises. Thanks for your genuine concern guys. I just got back from a brisk walk I don't feel any healthier for it.

Let me say this, walking is great only for so long, sooner or later you're going to have to ramp it up. Jogging sucks, you're going to waste just as much muscle as fat and end up looking like one of those emaciated runners we see outside in their incredibly attractive spandex outfits. If you want to run go find out a hill and sprint. You'll get twice the results in a quarter of the time.

Now finally I shed a tear for most of the people I see doing resistance exercise the old fashioned bodybuilding way. I was working out a couple of days ago and one of the trainers had a girl doing biceps curls on the preacher curl machine. Ok i do respect this man's expertise and he is a great guy but if this girl wants to get in shape while toning her arms there are tons of more useful things she could be doing than a single joint isolation exercise. I would have tought her overhead squats that would have worked her entire body and yes it would have toned her arms as well.

Just a small unstoppable force in a big world

My name is Joey The Juggernaut and this will be my story....

Health and fitness is my gift and I feel that it is my responsibility to share that gift to the world one way or another.

I currently work out at the YMCA on south park street, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It's a modest little gym that I love. The staff are great, the members are great, but it is in no way equipped to handle the intense way the my crew and I work out. There in lies my inspiration.

Now A little bit about myself. I do Crossfit like it is a religion. I follow a 3 day on 1 day off schedule and consistently push until I almost throw up. Believe me I've tried but I guess I'm just not a puker. I follow a strict paleo diet (see links section). I used to zone, but I really like to eat!

Here in Halifax we're lacking the kind of facility needed in which to do these kind of workouts to their full capacity. My dream is to take Juggernaut Fitness from a door to door business run out of the back of my car, to Halifax's premier Olympic weightlifting, power lifting and Crossfit affiliated studio. It will be the kind of place where you go to realize your true fitness potential.

Just imagine walking into a gym where dropping the plates from overhead is allowed. So is working out with your shirt and shoes off. Writing on the walls is permitted and the use of chalk is encouraged. Grunting and swearing are not only permitted but encouraged if on your way to setting a new personal record and throwing up not only happens regularly but is smiled upon. This is my dream, welcome to my story...
